Even before talks of combination began, Mount Mercy and St. Ambrose have celebrated a long history of collaboration. For many years, our two institutions have worked together to streamline paths to degrees for students, better our communities, and preserve the presence of Catholic higher education in Eastern Iowa.

Now, while embarking on this journey to combine, we have a great opportunity to share stories of the combined impact both schools have had on our alumni.

Nichole (Clefisch) Plagge serves as a beneficiary of the academic opportunities provided by both institutions as she received her undergraduate degree from Mount Mercy and graduate degree from St. Ambrose.

This morning, St. Ambrose President Amy Novak and Mount Mercy President Todd Olson signed a strategic agreement marking our intent to combine our institutions into one. Staff, faculty, and board members from both universities were there to witness this historic event.

Having completed months of due diligence and negotiations, both institutions received support from their Boards of Trustees and community leaders for this next step in their collaborative work to redefine Catholic higher education in Eastern Iowa. This milestone is a significant step forward in efforts to expand academic offerings, co-curricular programs, and innovative opportunities for students of both campuses.

Mount Mercy and St. Ambrose now enter a two-year period of regulatory approvals from both the Higher Learning Commission and the U.S. Department of Education.

Today, we celebrate #InternationalWomensDay by honoring the strong women who founded Mount Mercy during challenging times and situations—Catherine McAuley and the Sisters of Mercy.

Inspired by their courage and dedication, Mount Mercy strives to serve our institution, community, and beyond through the Sisters of Mercy Critical Concerns—earth, immigration, nonviolence, anti-racism, and women.

During December, we celebrate the founding of the Sisters of Mercy. In 1831, Catherine McAuley, Mary Ann Doyle, and Elizabeth Harley vowed to become the first Sisters of Mercy and dedicated their lives to serving the poor, sick, and uneducated. Their legacy and the Mercy mission continue today through various ministries around the world, including our own campus. Join us in recognizing the Sisters of Mercy and their remarkable work. 💙

“We must strive to do ordinary things extraordinarily well.” -Catherine McAuley
